Hate-mail as a service might seem like an outlandish non-starter of an idea, but if you’ve ever come across Mr. Bingo’s Hate Mail or Birdbymail you’ll already know that there’s a market for sending affectionate correspondence disguised as contemporary insults.
I started off with pencil sketches, but instead of digitising them and tracing I decided to start from scratch once in Illustrator. I resorted to tracing a photo of my hand in the ‘bird’ pose.
Even then, I made a lot of changes to the vector shape for the final design as what looked ‘correct’ in the photo, did not translate well to the vector.
I’ve created a minimal, black and white animated logo concept for the idea of sending insults by traditional mail. The envelope opens to allow a middle-finger salute to emerge.
In the first drafts of this animation, the finger was the first thing to appear, but by having the hand-lettering appear first and the envelope open as the finale, it’s serves to better deliver the punchline.
